Poker Face was one of the biggest new hit shows of 2023. So what can be expected for Season 2 on its release and plotlines? Find out here!

Debuting in January 2023 on Peacock, Poker Face was created by Rian Johnson, writer/director of hits like Knives Out. It’s a throwback to the mystery TV shows of the 1970s with Natasha Lyonne starring as Charlie Cale, a card shark who possesses the unusual ability to always know when someone is lying.

Circumstances lead to Charlie inadvertently causing the death of a Vegas mobster and the man’s father out to get her. That puts her on the run, moving from town to town. Somehow, anywhere she goes, Charlie stumbles onto a murder case and uses her skills to solve it.

The show is notable for its format, as each episode opens showing the killer committing the crime. It then flashes back to how Charlie got involved and made her own investigation.

The series has been a critical smash, with Lyonne earning an Emmy award nomination for it. It’s earned a second season, so what do we know about it?

Caution: This article contains SPOILERS for the Poker Face Season 1 finale

The first season finale had Charlie finally captured by mobster Cliff (Benjamin Bratt), who brought her to Sterling Frost, Sr (Ron Pearlman). Expecting to be killed, Charlie is shocked that Sterling is willing to let his son’s death go and offer Charlie a job for him.

However, having spent a year hunting Charlie across the country, Cliff couldn’t stand his boss was going to let her go. Instead, he killed Sterling and framed Charlie for it. Using her wits, Charlie escaped and got Cliff busted for murdering her friend Natalie in the pilot.

So it looked like Charlie was ready to live her life…until she got a call from Sterling’s rival, Beatrix Hasp (Rhea Pearlman), who warned Charlie she’d made a major enemy from the mob. Once more, Charlie found herself hitting the road with more enemies against her.

That was a good wrap-up for the season that can lead to fun in Season 2.

It’s expected Season 2 will follow much of the same formula as Season 1, with Charlie going around towns and somehow mixing into a crime. In interviews, Rian Johnson and showrunners Nora and Lilla Zuckerman indicate they may mix it up, making it look like the killer is someone else before Charle enters things.

It’s likely Charlie will clash with Hasp and her forces but no confirmation yet. There may also be insight into Charlie’s past and what made her this way following a visit to her estranged sister (Clea DuVull). It sounds like Season 2 won’t change much of what made Season 1 work.

The joy of Poker Face is that Lyonne herself is the only regular cast member, and each episode is packed with a bevy of guest stars. Season 2 will likely continue that as the showrunners will want to bring in more guests to highlight episodes. They also mentioned the idea of having Season 1 guest actors return in all new roles.

Rhea Pearlman is likely to pop up as Beatrix Hasp, but there’s no word on when or how many episodes it will be. So once more, Lyonne is going to be the only regular face, and watching her bounce off these other guest stars is going to be a great thing to watch.

The show was already likely to be delayed until 2024 due to the busy schedules of Johnson and Lyonne. The ongoing strikes across Hollywood are only delaying it further, so even if they end soon, it’s unlikely the show will begin production before the end of 2023. Thus, fans will sadly have to wait a while to see the return of Charlie Cale and her unique crime-solving adventures.

Poker Face season 1 is streaming on Peacock.
